"Do I really need counselling?"Counselling can be intimidating. Our culture and media have all kinds of stereotypes and stigmas about what it is like to go to therapy or counselling and the kinds of people who go. It can also be scary to open up to someone new and be vulnerable, to be truthful about what you're feeling and experiencing, and to think about approaching things in a new way. If you're struggling to manage life's ups and downs, feeling stuck, noticing that certain behaviours are causing problems for you and you can't stop, or having difficulty enjoying life, counselling will probably be helpful for you. Some common symptoms and experiences that bring people to counselling include: - low mood and hopelessness - difficulty sleeping, eating or taking pleasure in things you would normally enjoy - anxiety and fear, including flashbacks or panic attacks - feeling spaced out, foggy or having trouble concentrating - difficulties in key relationships with partners, work colleagues, roommates or family of origin - compulsive behaviour or consumption of substances and alcohol. - repetitive, distressing patterns of behaviour in any area of your life - suicidal thinking or non-suicidal self-harm - difficulty communicating clearly, engaging in self-care or setting boundaries - fear of abandonment or fear of intimacy - grief and loss - questioning or developing one's identity, longing for a sense of purpose and belonging - adjusting to major life changes and transitions - self-criticism and shame - challenges with healthy sexuality and emotional intimacy |
